Anyone who has suffered stress and anxiety knows the debilitating effects it can have on your health. Stress in cats acts much the same way, and not only can it exacerbate existing physical conditions, but it can lead to a number of problems often considered behavioral, such as litter box avoidance, aggressive behavior, or depression and withdrawal. When behavioral problems suddenly appear, savvy cat owners soon learn to look first for signs of health problems (such as urinary tract infections with litter box avoidance), and next for stress factors, such as changes in the environment.

Although humans relate stress to emotional factors, and those are also seen in feline stress, stress and anxiety in cats can come from other sources, including environmental changes and physical stress. You will find that many of these areas overlap as we explore further. We will look at some of the causes of stress in cats, the symptoms, and how we can help our cat get back on an even keel, for better physical and emotional health.

External Causes of Stress in Cats

Cats do not deal well with change. Even subtle changes in a cat's environment can lead to stress; substantial changes, such as moving, introduction of a new baby, spouse, or other animal to the household, can have devastating effects.

• New Family Members, Human or Animal: Cats may react in a number of ways to new family members, including aggression, withdrawal, or sudden litter box avoidance, to name a few. By understanding this and planning ahead, the concerned caregiver can help her cat avoid the stress of a sudden introduction, while letting the cat know that he is still "number one" in the family tree. The newcomer needs to allow the cat to come around at his own pace, and to avoid trying to rush the relationship.
• Moving to a New Residence: Moving calls for care in seeing that your cat's life is disrupted as little as possible. During a local move, it helps to keep him closed off in a separate room with his favorite "blankie," toys, litter box, food and bed, while the rest of the house is moved. Last, bring kitty and all his belongings to the new house or apartment, where you will put him in his own "safe room" while you unpack and rearrange the rest of the household. Having his own things around him will help him understand that he is home. A long distance move is better handled with help. Have one person go ahead to the new residence and set up kitty's safe room. The other will accompany the cat in a carrier with his favorite toy or "blankie," whether by plane, train, or automobile.
• A New Job: A new job or other change in daily routine should also be handled by planning ahead. A week before starting work, start leaving for the day, for gradually increasing periods of time. Before leaving, hold you cat and tell her, "I'm going to be away for awhile, but I promise to come back to you. I love you and I'll miss you, but we'll have fun together when I return." Upon your return, make a big deal over your cat. Tell her how much you missed her and how good it is to be back home. Carry her around, pet her, and ask her how her day was. By the time your job starts, your kitty will be quite accustomed to your absence during the day, and the two of you will look forward to new bonding experience each night upon your return.
• Loud Parties and Noises: Holidays are particularly stressful for cats, especially those which focus on fireworks. Large parties with the doorbell constantly ringing, accompanied by loud music, talking, and laughing, will usually send even the most sanguine cat running for cover.
• The View Through the Window: A discussion of external stressors would not be complete without mentioning re-directed aggression, a sudden and often inexplicable phenomenon which is more common than realized, Re-directed aggression often happens when a household cat is sitting on his favorite perch, gazing out the window. Suddenly he sees a strange cat stroll through his yard. Frustrated because he can't get outside to defend his territory, the cat will suddenly attack the closest being, whether it is another resident cat or a hapless human. Dealing with this form of aggression calls for creative thinking, which includes keeping your cat away from that window or somehow barring his view, while taking steps to discourage the strange cat from further exploration in your yard..

1. Persian Cats

12. Domestic or Mixed Breed Cats

A list of popular cat breeds would not be complete without including the very popular domestic cat, which the majority of my readers enjoy as family members. It is impossible to quantify a common personality trait of domestic cats, because so many different factors are involved. However, from my own decades of experience with my own "Moggies," and from over 15 years of reading comments from readers and forum members, I can safely say this: "Rare is the case where a domestic cat, given responsible care, companionship, and loved as a family member, that he or she will not respond with the unconditional love they are so famous for.

The Domestic Cat Has Mixed Reception Among Cat Registries

While it is unlikely that CFA will ever accept Domestic cats in their registries, due to lack of background breeding information, that registry does have a show categorie reserved for the "Household Pet," which we know as the domestic cat. It is gratifying that one of the terms of entry be that the cat cannot be declawed, and if it is eight months old or older, it must be spayed or neutered.

The snack black list for Cat

• Fatty foods: Rich or fatty foods can cause digestive stress for your cat.  For example, turkey, ham or other meats rich in fat will result in diarrhea.  Excessive fat intake can also cause a life-threatening inflammatory disease called pancreatitis. Signs of this disease include vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and a loss of appetite. If your cat is craving meats, satisfy his hunger by giving him turkey-flavored cat food,
• Bones: ones from meat, fish and poultry pose a potential danger to your kitty and should be avoided. If your cat manages to pull a bone from your trash, table or counter he could severely damage his digestive tract. A bone can result in laceration or obstruction within your kitty's digestive system,
• Onion and garlic: You may also be tempted to give your kitten baby food, which can contain onion powder — a highly toxic ingredient for your cat. Any type of onion or garlic — raw, cooked or in powder form — can damage your kitten's red blood cells and cause life-threatening anemia. Stews, soups and sauces are sometimes a hidden source of onion and garlic,
• Undercooked meat: Raw or undercooked meat may contain bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite. Likewise, keep your cat away from moldy or spoiled foods. They can contain toxins which can cause tremors, shaking, seizures, diarrhea and vomiting,
• Some nuts: Macadamia nuts contain an unknown toxin which can affect your cat’s digestive and nervous systems.  They have also been known to cause muscular weakness and tremors in dogs. Researchers believe that macadamia nuts can have the same effect on your cat,
• Chocolate, raisins and grapes: Unlike dogs, most cats are not drawn to sweets. Even so, take note: a chocolate snack can cause increased heart rate, tremors and hyperactivity in your cat. The severity of the reaction depends on the type of chocolate and how much is eaten. Dark baking chocolate will cause a more severe reaction than milk chocolate. Also, raisins and grapes have been proven to induce kidney failure in dogs. There have been reports of similar effects on cats, so it is wise to avoid letting your cat ingest these fruits,
• Cow's milk: We all picture pouring our beloved kitten a fresh, cold saucer of milk. Unlikely as it may seem, milk is a no-no for your cat. Shortly after they’re weaned, kittens lose the ability to digest milk. More than a few of licks could translate into a very messy episode of diarrhea. If your kitten has a taste for milk, specially formulated lactose-free milk products are available for cats which should satisfy his craving.

The most important thing you can do for your cat is to ensure that he receives the nutrition and care that he needs. If you remember the things to avoid giving your cat, as well the things he needs to thrive, your cat will have a long, happy and healthy life as member of your family.

Vaksinasi

Salah satu cara untuk mencegah dan melindungi kucing anda dari berbagai infeksi enteritis feline dan influenza feline, anak kucing sebaiknya di vaksinasi. Injeksi pertama biasanya di berikan pada usia 8-9 minggu dan yang kedua ketika berumur 12 minggu. Pemberian vaksinasi sebaiknya dilakukan ketika kondisi kucing sedang prima. Untuk meningkatkan tingkat perlindungan, pada kucing dewasa di butuhkan regular booster ( biasanya sekali setiap 1-3 tahun). Dokter hewan anda akan memberi penjelasan mengenai program vaksinasi tersebut dan segala resiko yang berhubungan dengan berbagai gejala penyakit di sekitar anda. Di perkotaan, di mana tingkat densitas kucing tinggi, resiko infeksi akan jauh lebih tinggi. Disamping itu injeksi vaksi rabies juga sangat diperlukan untuk kucing dewasa.

Membersihkan kotoran telinga.

Kebanyakan kucing memiliki kotoran telinga. Meskipun tidak menunjukkan gejala yang serius namun kotoran yang menumpuk banyak dapat menimbulkan iritasi yang mengakibatkan luka. Pada kasus yang parah kanal telinga dapat terbendung yang mengakibatkan terjadinya infeksi. Meskipun tidak menimbulak rasa sakit namun kotoran-kotoran di telinga dapat sangat mengganggu kucing anda dan mungkin bisa menyebar ke hewan peliharaan anda yang lainnya. Oleh karena itu sering-seringlah membersihkan telinga kucing anda dengan tissue atau kain halus yang di beri air hangat. Jika telinga kucing anda mulai menampakkan gumpalan tipis berwarna coklat yang lumayan meluas, segera hubungi dokter hewan anda untuk di periksa lebih lanjut. Cara membersihkan kotoran telinga kucing secara sederhana dan berkala dapat dilakukan menggunakan cotton bud atau menggunakan cairan pembersih yang bisa diperoleh di pet shop.

Sebelum memberikan obat tetes telinga, telinga kucing perlu dibersihkan terlebih dahulu, karena timbunan kotoran dan lilin/cerumen menyebabkan obat tidak bekerja dengan maksimal. Ada tiga macam cara membersihkan telinga kucing yang sering digunakan dokter hewan, yaitu :

1. metoda suction/hisap. Metoda ini menggunakan alat/mesin penghisap khusus atau balon penghisap khusus yang terbuat dari karet. Cara ini dilakukan bila kotoran telinga/nanah bersifat agak cair. Digunakan pula untuk membersihkan telinga bagian tengah terutama ketika gendang telinga telah rusak/sobek.
2. irigasi. Cara ini dilakukan dengan memasukkan cairan ceruminolitik yang berfungsi menghancurkan/melepaskan lilin/lotoran dalam telinga. Cairan tersebut kemudian dikeluarkan lagi bersama kotoran yang berasal dari dalam telinga.
3. mekanis. Cara ini yang paling sering dan mudah serta bisa dilakukan sendiri di rumah. Kotoran telinga dibersihkan  dengan kapas bertangkai/cotton bud atau sendok cerumen.

Cara membersihkan telinga kucing :

1. Tetesi saluran telinga dengan cairan pembersih. Cairan pembersih telinga bisa di beli petshop atau dokter hewan yang menyediakan.
2. Pijat-pijat dengan lembut bagian dasar telinga agar cairan pembersih dapat menyebar dengan rata ke seluruh bagian telinga.
3. Biarkan kucing menggeleng-gelengkan kepala agar sisa cairan pembersih dan kotoran dapat keluar.
4. Bersihkan sisa-sisa cairan pembersih dan kotoran yang terdapat di telinga bagian luar dengan kapas atau tisue. Bersihkan celah/lekukan yang terdapat pada telinga dengan menggunakan cotton bud. Hati-hati saat membersihkan lubang/saluran telinga. Bila ragu-ragu atau takut menyebabkan luka pada telinga kucing, sebaiknya  bawa kucing anda ke dokter hewan. Perhatikan atau  tanyakan cara membersihkan telinga kucing yang baik dan aman  pada dokter hewan tersebut.
5. Tindakan pembersihan telinga diulang hingga semua kotoran telah keluar. Pada saat awal, setidaknya telinga perlu dibersihkan setiap hari selama beberapa hari berturut-turut agar semua kotoran yang terdapat dalam telinga bisa keluar.
6. Bersihkan telinga secara rutin seperti yang dianjurkan . Dalam keadaan normal telinga kucing biasanya dibersihkan 2-4 minggu sekali atau bila terlihat ada kotoran.

Memotong kuku.

Anatomi kuku kucing sangat unik. Tidak seperti anjing, kuku kucing dapat ditarik keluar dan ke dalam. Dalam keadaan normal kuku kucing tertarik ke dalam dan tersembunyi. Bila kucing  sedang marah atau mencakar, barulah kukunya dikeluarkan. Manusia yang mempunyai jaringan daging  yang berada di bawah kuku. Kucing juga mempunyai jaringan ini, hanya letaknya sedikit berbeda dari manusia. Jaringan ini berwarna merah muda, berbeda dengan warna kuku yang berwarna putih transparan. Letak dan batas jaringan daging  ini perlu diperhatikan agar tidak terpotong pada saat menggunting kuku kucing. Bila terpotong, akan muncul darah dari jaringan yang terluka dan kucing akan merasa kesakitan.

Gunting kuku adalah alat utama yang diperlukan bila ingin memotong kuku. Banyak model dan jenis gunting kuku khusus hewan kesayangan yang dijual di petshop-petshop. Gunting kuku yang sering dipergunakan sehari-hari untuk memotong kuku orang juga bisa digunakan. Pastikan gunting kuku yang akan digunakan benar-benar tajam. Karena bila kurang tajam, bentuk potongan kuku kucing kurang bagus, bahkan kadang-kadang kukunya bisa pecah.

Tidak ada patokan yang pasti  cara memegang kucing pada saat memotong kukunya. Yang terpenting kucing merasa nyaman dan meminimalkan pergerakan kucing. Selain itu juga perlu diperhatikan reaksi kucing menggigit atau mencakar, sebaiknya posisi tangan kita pada saat memegang kaki kucing agak jauh dari jangkauan mulut kucing. Bisa juga memegang kucing dengan bantuan orang lain, agar kucing lebih mudah dikendalikan. Cara memotong kuku antara lain:

1. tekan telapak kaki kucing agar kuku muncul
2. perhatikan batas kuku dengan daging di bawahnya (quick). Potong kuku dengan jarak sekitar 1 mm dari quick. Bila terlalu dekat, akan terasa sakit.  Yang perlu diperhatikan adalah posisi  alat pemotong dengan kuku. Masing-masing alat pemotong berbeda cara penggunaannya. Prinsipnya kuku dipotong dari bawah ke atas (vertikal), bukan dari samping. Kemungkinan kuku pecah akan semakin besar bila dipotong dari samping.
3. potong kuku satu persatu dengan hati-hati.
4. jangan lupa memotong kuku jempol. Kukunya terletak lebih dekat pergelangan. Kuku jempol paling jarang dipakai menggaruk, sehingga biasanya lebih panjang dibandingkan kuku lainnya. Pada beberapa kasus yang kukunya jarang sekali dipotong, kuku “jempol” ini tumbuh melingkar dan menusuk kaki.
5. normalnya kaki depan mempunyai 5 kuku dan 4 kuku pada kaki belakang. Beberapa kucing mempunyai jumlah jari yang berlebih yang disebut polidactyl. Kucing polidactyl bisa mempunyai 6 jari pada kaki depan.
6. potong kuku dengan jarak agak jauh dari quick (+ 1 mm). Lebih baik memotong kuku sedikit-sedikit tetapi lebih sering dilakukan (1 atau 2 minggu sekali). Dari pada jarang, tetapi sekalinya dipotong, kuku dipotong pendek sekali hingga ke dekat quick.

Memandikan.

Sebelum dimandikan, periksa bagian-bagian yang sakit di seluruh tubuh. Jamur biasanya menyerang bagian dagu, ketiak, lipatan paha, telapak kaki, ekor dan pangkal ekor. Tungau Scabies paling sering menyerang bagian telinga luar dan ujung-ujung telingan bagian dalam. Kutu pinjal  sering menyerang bagian atas kepala, dagu, ketiak dan lipatan paha. Ingat-ingatlah bagian yang sakit tersebut, karena harus terkena shampoo dan disikat pada saat dimandikan.

Basahi seluruh tubuh kucing dengan air dingin/hangat (kucing kecil sebaiknya dimandikan dengan air hangat). Pastikan air membasahi seluruh bulu sampai ke kulit. Pengobatan tidak akan efektif bila air dan shampoo tidak mencapai kulit.  Pada kucing dengan bulu panjang dan tebal lebih mudah disemprot menggunakan air bertekanan tinggi.

Ratakan shampoo keseluruh tubuh sambil dipijat/disisir menggunakan jari. Hati-hati pada saat memberikan shampoo pada daerah sekitar mata dan hidung (wajah). Usahakan shampoo tidak masuk ke mata. Setelah merata, sikat  dan bersihkan bagian-bagian yang sakit dengan sikat gigi. Hati-hati bila menyikat bagian yang luka. Pastikan shampoo berada di tubuh selama 5-7 menit agar kutu, jamur dan bakteri  penyebab penyakit mati terkena shampoo obat.

Bilas seluruh tubuh kucing dengan air hingga bersih. Periksa kembali bagian-bagian yang sakit. Pemberian shampo diulang sekali lagi, sambil membersihkan/menyikat kembali bagian-bagian yang sakit. Ratakan shampoo dan biarkan kembali 5-7 menit, kemudian dibilas sampai bersih.

Keringkan kucing dengan handuk, kemudian keringkan kucing dengan pengering rambut (hairdryer) sambil disisir. Penyisiran bertujuan menghilangkan rambut yang rontok dan mempercepat pengeringan rambut. Pastikan bulu dan seluruh tubuh kucing kering sampai ke kulit, terutama di daerah dengan bulu tebal dan yang agak sulit seperti daerah perut, kaki belakang, daerah diantara kaki belakang, pangkal ekor dan telapak kaki. Pengeringan yang tidak sempurna akan menciptakan lingkungan dan kelembaban yang cocok bagi tumbuhnya jamur.

Pola Warna "Tabby" Pada Kucing

Jika anda seorang penyayang kucing tulen, anda pasti sering mendengar istilah "tabby". Kadang kala istilah “tabby” seringkali disalah intepretasikan dengan ras kucing. padahal tabby bukanlah ras kucing, melainkan berhubungan dengan pola warna. Disebut tabby apabila kucing memiliki pola garis dan dapat pula berpola garis serta bergelombang. Saat  ini pola tabby sangat populer sehingga sering kita temui pada banyak jenis kucing pedegree maupun non pedegree. 

Walaupun banyak sekali ditemui variasi pola tabby ini, namun demikian pada dasarnya pola tabby dapat diktegorikan menjadi empat bagian atau terkadang dapat pula digolongkan menjadi lima macam dimana pola tabby dianggap sebagai pola dasar. Sebagai contoh pola "patched" tabby, yang banyak dijumpai pada kucing calico atau tortoiseshell. Gen pengontrol warna tabby ini dapat dijumpai pada kucing local. Jika anda memiliki kucing lokal berwarna hitam, cobalah perhatikan pola warnanya di tempat yang terang, cobalah amati dengan seksama apakah ada pola warna tabby yang akan terlihat samar-samar?

Tipe pola Tabby :

1. Classic: pola ini memiliki warna yang sangat kontras, dengan garis tegas bergelombang yang ujungnya berakhir pada bagian samping tubuh kucing,
2. Mackerel (striped):pola warna ini terkadang agak membingungkan dan pada umumnya disebut dengan Classic Tabby. Kucing dengan pola ini memiliki garis-garis melingkar di sekeliling kaki dan ekor dan di bagian leher yang menyerupai kalung jika dilihat dari depan. Dengan garis penuh atau terkadang garis putus putus yang mengarah kebagian samping tubuh kucing. Kucing ini memiliki warna yang lebih gelap pada totol totol di bagian perutnya, 
3. Spotted: Kucing Ocicat dan American Bobtail merupakan contoh yang sangat baik untuk mengambarkan pola warna ini. Pola bintik-bintik dengan ukuran agar besar merupakan cirri khas pola warna ini,
4. Agouti (Ticked): Sebagian besar kucing tabby memiliki warna agouti sebagai bagian dari pola warnanya. Jika anda amati lebih jauh, akan terlihat garis-garis pendek berwarna di sepanjang bulu kucing. Pola warna ini akan terlihat dengan jelas di bawah sinar matahari. Contoh klasik dari warna ini adalah kucing Abyssinian.

Gill, 54, has been married for 36 years and has a son, daughter and three grandchildren. 1. Large Suites; Perfect for one guest but large enough for two, 1 x guest £16, 2 x guest £25
2. Extra Large Suites; Perfect for one or two guests to share but large enough for three, 1 x guest - £19, 2 x guest - £34, 3 x guest - £38
3. Super Sized Suites – They are able to provide a super sized suite for the cat who really needs to stretch out! These consist of two inter-connecting rooms comprising two bedrooms and two play areas large enough for five guests. £45 between 1 and 3 guests. £55 for four guests and £60 for five guests.
